INSPIRED PIECES
In freshman year I created a glass mosaic, inspired by Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". In order to create the wavelike affect, I individually cut and glued minuscule shards of glass to a cork board. I was initially drawn to Hokusai's wave the first time I saw it, due to the multiple dimensions the print holds. Initially the wave is seen as tranquil, but with a deeper look, it's clear that the wave is heading for destruction. In my mosaic, I aimed the glass shards purposefully toward the top of the wave, attempting to incite a level of danger within the beauty.
The face on the left was a piece I created on a winter night, during my Junior year. I was fascinated with Picasso's use of color and shapes to create self portraits, and the emotion each painting seemed to convey. As I created this face, I found myself adopting classic motifs from Picasso’s work, but in my own medium. This face was a step into a very different direction for me as an artist, diving into color and clear shapes, rather than my usually darker imagery.
